Sculptor to
Display
Creatures from
Plastiquarium™

Charlotte, NC:
Although the
local water
shortage may
have cramped the
style of many
Charlotte
residents,
recent
restrictions
have not stopped
nationally
recognized
sculptor David
Edgar from
"fishing"
neighborhood
recycle bins to
snag recycled
plastic bottles
to create his
popular
"Creatures from
the
Plastiquarium™."
On Wednesday,
November 14, the
Mecklenburg
County Recycling
Center at 1007
Amble Drive will
host a free
public preview
reception from
5:00 - 7:00 PM
for an exhibit
of the local
artist's work to
celebrate
America Recycles
Day. As part of
Edgar's 2007
Arts & Science
Council Artist
Project grant,
the exhibit will
remain open
through November
30, 2007.
Edgar's work is
also in the
Levine
Children's
Hospital
collection,
which will open
to the public on
October 20.
Earlier this
spring, the
sculptor was
also on hand to
promote
recycling at
Mecklenburg
County's Earth
Day celebration.
A metal sculptor
for 30 years,
Edgar began
working with
recyclable
plastics in
February 2004
when, on a lark,
he made a mask
from a colorful
detergent bottle
to wear to a
Panthers Super
Bowl party.
Working with
post-consumer
recyclable
plastic
containers,
mostly for
household
laundry products
and beverages,
he found their
organic shapes,
with bright
focus group
approved colors
and label
graphics, evoked
images of
fantasy tropical
fish.
